Back to school
After so much consideration I have made the decision to go back to school. I am going to get my Bachelors of Science Majoring in Computer Network Engineering and Communications Management. Over the past 4 weeks I have looked at many schools and checked out many degree programs and settled on degree program offered by Devry University.
I start classes on Monday October 28th for the November Session. The Enrollment and admissions process was very straight forward and easy. I worked with an admissions councilor and he helped me through each step of the way. This process was more in-depth and different from when I went to SUNY Ulster County Community College. When I registered for schooling at Ulster I felt like I was left to my own devices and thrown to the wolves in a proverbial sense.
I enjoyed the whole enrollment ad admissions process that Devry offered. Each step and requirement was discussed and all my questions were quickly answered and the promises that were made were delivered on or close to schedule where as there was much confusion and lack of support throughout the registration process when I started Ulster.
As with enrolling to any Educational institution, I had to take several placement exams. Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and Algebra were the tests that I had to take. I passed every test, however, I didn’t do that well with the algebra test. Those tests determined if I needed to take any remedial classes. It has been 10 years since I took an Algebra class and it was Basic Algebra so I knew the fundamentals but didn’t remember or knew some of the complex equations. I have been placed in Math-098 instead of Math 100, I don’t mind that much. I rather retake the basics and make sure I get a full understanding so that I can succeed in the higher level classes.
The Next step was working with the financial aid department. . They were professional and answered all my questions regarding what options are available to me. They were able to give me a detailed invoice on where my money was going where I never was given that kind of information when I was working towards my Associates degree.
To be frank, I am looking forward to starting. It has been 5 years since I graduated with my Associates in Applied Science and it is time to move on as employers won’t look at someone without a Bachelor’s Degree now. I want to make sure I can market myself and getting my Bachelors is the best way to do it. I know that about 40 of my credits from Ulster were able to be fully transferred and that will help me graduate sooner than if I had zero credits.
Thinking optimistically, I know I am going to do well. I just need to get into my groove and manage my time wisely to handle working both Full time, going to school full-time online and owning a house with its never-ending chores. This should be a rewarding adventure and I know I will conquer what is given to me. .
